Flooding in Germany

Flooding in Germany

After three days of travel the roads turned into rivers. It was the worst flood in centuries and it happened the moment I arrived.

I waited it out (as if I had a choice) in a small hotel on top of a hill in Hartmansdorf. After four days the rain had sort of stopped and the water level had gone down enough to be able to see where the road was. It took hours to find a border crossing that was open and a road that went to it.

I wanted some adventure, but had never thought it would come that soon.

Even after the rain had stopped and most of the water had gone, there were still a lot of very wet roads. The biggest problem were the man-hole covers. Or more accurate, the missing man-hole covers.

Most of the eastern European countries were struggling with the high water level of the Donau. Everywhere I came, the water had already been.

Here in Budapest the parliament building now has a swimming pool out front. Downside is that the people that work on the ground-floor need scuba-gear to go to work.

Finally after many days of rain the sky turned blue in Bulgaria. My luck had changed and my rain-jacket became unnecessary luggage.

Bulgaria was a difficult country due to the strange alphabet. How to find a camping or a restaurant if you don't know what the word looks like?
